Silent Shadow

Whose Armor is that?

Darthend finds himself chained to a wall alongside his ogre friend, Gruk, waiting for bets to made on who will live and die in the arena the next day.  Somewhere in Texas – the Pecos Empire – he's done this hundreds of times before.  But today, he hears a familiar whine of machinery, and turns to see his father's Glitter Boy suit walking by, towing a cage with a human.

He watches as a hobgoblin gets out of the beat up GB – the left leg is dragging, and the machinery sounds terrible.  Deciding to escape, he waits until the orc guards change.  They wear and use MDC stuff – so he needs to be careful.  But Gruk comes to the rescue – he's stashed a laser scalpel and cuts through the MDC chains.

Gruk and Darthend escape and race down the lane to the warehouse that the local inn uses for a parking garage, taking the dead orc's blaster rifle.  They blow by a goblin guarding the door, and blast right through.  The GB is there, and miraculously the AI (Hannah) recognizes Darthend and lets him fire the suit up.  A short fire fight ensues, and more orcs run – alerting Morkeleb and his lieutenant.  Darthend rips the cage away and releases Owen Jackson – an operator caught by the hobgoblin.  He breaks into an older decrepit and modified Coalition Mark V APC – and they speed off into the night.

They make camp in a building at the outskirts of an ancient pre-Rifts city, hoping there's nothing around.  Gurk goes and looks for food while Owen gets to work on the jet stabilization system on the GB, so Darthend can fire his Boom Gun without getting knocked over.  The night drags on…

Long Night

Darthend and friends are in the abandoned pre-rifts city, and Gruk the ogre goes off in search of food.  An hour or so later, he comes back and convinces Darthend to come look at a group of humanoids that appear to be about to perform some sort of sacrifice.  They are some sort of druid-throwback group – about 10 strong – and are gathered around a fire with food (and a coffee pot!) and about to sacrifice a humanoid and Dog Boy – a beagle, to be exact.

Darthend shoots the head worshipper – in the head with his helmet and antlers…but it didn't really kill the guy.  Gruk opens up with his "Firebreather" and knocks most of them down.  One bad-guy charges with a vibro blade – Darthend runs to meet him after he casts some sort of spell that makes the weeds around him grow and get nasty little mouths!  They meet at an ancient car – Darthend crouches down and the druid jumps up over the car. Darthend blasts him with his C-18 laser pistol – aiming for the leg where it's not armored.  The shot is successful, ripping the guys leg off and killing rather neatly.

They save the psi-stalker (Kal) and the Dog Boy (Spike) and grab some stuff, heading back for the safety of the APC and Darthend's GB suit.  They notice movement – and Darthend charges in to get in his suit, as Owen is just finishing up the repair to the jet stabilization system.  Morkeleb's lieutenant seems to have gotten about 30 Orcs along with a dragon and a Thornhead demon.

The Thornhead gets killed, and Darthend rips off one of its' antlers – and shoots the dragon a couple of times with his boom gun. It teleports away, and the last of the orcs runs off or is defeated.  They flee in the APC into the night, heading south on what used to be I20 towards the Pecos River and the city of Pecos.  During the drive they eat and have some coffee, and decide to head to El Paso.

Catch - up

Since last time I posted on this, the campaign has progressed.  The party fled from the abandoned town they were in, and headed south on an ancient highway in their APC.  They ended up turning west towards El Paso, after having a quick and combat free encounter with a couple of Coalition Sky Cycles.

In El Paso, they sold thier APC and outfitted themselves with a new (or new to them!) ATV Mountaineer, nuclear engine with a rail gun on top.  Gruk mans the 'gun while Owen drives.  Kal and Spike ride while Darthend walks most of the time – at least so far.  The rest of the money was spent outfitting everyone – at least in armor and weapons with some food and other adventuring equipment.

Darthend and Gruk wander into a bar in search of employment – they pass up an offer from Demonbusters to join them as contractors because the party has no intention of hanging out in Mexico.  [Demonbusters said that they were being hired to explore the Vampire Kingdoms rumors]  They then made the acquaintance of a group of dwarves.  They haven't been in the world long, and only one spoke Spanish (his name was Curly) – but they decided that the party would escort the clan north.  For no pay.  Gruk wasn't all that happy about that, but Darthend seems to have become the Captain of a company.  At least that's what everyone calls him now.

So the next day they meet up with 7 wagons pulled in three lines by turtle like creatures called Chugs.  There are about 80 dwarves all together, only a few have a couple of modern weapons between them all.  They form into a convoy and head north.  Later that morning they see a plume of dust from just over the ridge.  Gruk with his cyber hearing eventually determines that they are a group of motorcycle riders.  At a late lunch by the ruins of a bridge and town over what used to be the Rio Grande, Darthend hops up on top of a building and sees two miles away a group of humanoids (orcs, etc) on motorcycles scavenging in a ruined town.  They leave, and the group continues on their way till nightfall.

They are close to a town called Mesa Bay, and will probably get there the next day.  Until then, they sleep or stand watch.  Hannah, the GBs AI keeps a monitor on what's going on.

North

The party heads north, slowed greatly by the dwarves' wagons.  They go through the town of Mesa, and Darthend notices an ATV much like thier own with the black claw of Morkeleb on it.  He realizes they're being followed – and he destroys a video probe.

Darthend waits just outside of town, and then heads north well after the rest of the group – and eventually he catches three gargoyles following them.  He talks with them, and they tell him that for some reason, Morkeleb wants him – not dead, just him to talk.  He sends them back, and the group heads over a ridge to another valley.  Along the way they realize that there are fast moving flying vehicles on the road behind them – can't say for sure what or who, but now they're along a more deserted area – alone.
